well, this one is a bit limited, and the new one is far better, far more customisable with loads more features and best of all its all ours, we have complete control over it since its on our own website. Oh and in case anyone hadnt already figured it out we have a new website too www.leedsanime.com

Well yes it is totally separat since nobody told me we allready had a domain name. We have a new website hosted entirely separately from the university with a brand new .com domain and a new forum which is part of that domain. It was the new comittees decision to have a new and improved website and the only way to have the sort of site we wanted was to buy some proper hosting. If Id known about the old domain name, then I would have asked to have it transferred to the new site, but It doesnt really matter now, i can still probably have that domain transferred to our new hosting as well.

Oh dear. Bit of a miscommunication it seems!
That was why we'd stressed that you might want to funk up the website - because we'd got a new one.
But nevermind! If you speak to Jess I'm sure you can sort it so that it directs over to the new one. Either way it'll be good to have something to put on the flyers and to give the society a nice solid web base.

Awesome! That's brilliant! (Have you got any jpegs of them? I'd love to see). Also someone needs to get on to the East Asian Studies to get them sent in the new students registration packs. (Not trying to be bossy, just reminding !)

Soooo....why have we got a new forum? I wondered that too So did I. Also, looking at the "new and improved" website, I have to ask: Jamie, is your keyboard missing one of these: ? If it isn't, maybe you could learn to use it? Your grammar is making the society look bad. Let's look at the homepage... "Were currently in the process" ...so, you were in the process, and then what happened? "while your at it" While my at it is doing... what? "Thanks to everyone thats come along" *sigh* I'm also told that these errors are on the flyers you've had printed. If you're not confident with spelling, grammar or punctuation, maybe you could have asked someone who is to proofread?

Im terribly sorry the page doesnt agree with you, I didnt really have time to proof read it, so yeah theres probably a few mistakes, its not like it matters, that page isn't going to be there for very long, I only uploaded it to make sure everything worked alright. As for the flyers, you haven't even seen them, so how the hell would you know

that page isn't going to be there for very long, I only uploaded it to make sure everything worked alright Are you going to correctly punctuate the one that replaces it, or are you going to continue making it look like this is a society full of illiterate n0 0bs? And how about your new forum? Had you missed these: "If your new to the forum" "Any problems your having or glitches youve found" "Things youd like to see on the forum" "Find out what weve got planned" "dont forget to list your own stuff too" "heres where to find out what happened" ?

Yeah, the forums ace. The benefits of having a forum on own personal server other than a generic free board are great (Mor customisable, phpBB is a little faster, more features, better support, mySQL database is completly user defined so errors can be fixed locally and backups a lot easier.)
To be honest, a lot of the benefits won't be visable by the end user but if a screw up should occur, it should be a breeze to fix!

Look, boys, let's act like adults shall we.
Ed - please be civil. You could have easily pointed things out more politely. There is no need to resort to personal attacks.
Jamie - please recognise that spelling and grammar mistakes make us look unclassy and illeducated. The society is brilliant, and while I doubt anyone would be majorly put off by it, it certainly doesn't help our image. Besides, now that the errors have been pointed out, it'll be easy to change them.
I know that you posted somewhere that you were going to try to keep the spam down in the new forum, and part of what many consider to be spam is poor spelling and grammar. We aren't a group of 13 year olds who can't find anything better to do than talk in AOLspeak all day. Having things written in nice, clear English makes them easier and more enjoyable to read. I am writing this as a note to everyone who can't be bothered to type something out properly. If you can't take the extra few seconds to add in capitals and punctuation then why do you think your post content is worth people's time?
On a more positive note, the new site seems to be coming along nicely. The links section is quite good - but perhaps you could add in links to the places we get discounts at?

I hate to add to the 13 year old boy debate....but I personally find internet acronyms and L33T speak far more annoying and grating on the eye than the occasional spelling mistake or absence of a punctuation mark. Being someone who doesn't live on internet forums (bar this one) or IRC chatrooms I don't understand some of them, and I also think it helps perpetuate the stereotype of us being nerdy and elite to people who may be visiting our boards in the near future. So if we are to control our spelling and punctuation, can we regulate those who don't even bother to write regular sentences? No offence meant, it's just an idea...

[Jamie, is your keyboard missing one of these: ? I normally wouldnt step in here, but for once i feel its actually appropriate... stop being so pathetic ed, Jamie is a designer, not an english student... Jamie has a course and education to care about... any extra effort put in by him should be at least accepted... I havent signed up yet to the new forum, but i look forward to it... at the end of the day, Jamie is the new web admin doo-dar and if he makes a new forum, then he does... deal with it if anything we should ask you to remove these keys....

stop being so pathetic ed, Jamie is a designer, not an english student... I don't think even graphic designers can get away with writing of the calibre of "your all gay!!1" Besides, the problem isn't so much that Jamie made the mistakes in the first place. Everyone makes mistakes. It's that they've been pointed out to him and he flatly refuses to fix them, because he thinks that's beneath him.

Post by Jamie on Jun 18, 2006 8:02:56 GMT
Who said I refused to fix them? I certainly didnt. Did it occurr to you perhaps that I have other things to do right now rather than go round checking all my sentences for proper grammer. Im more concerned with making sure the website and forum are up and running properly. When that is all sorted, then I will worry about my punctuation.

The bad grammar does frankly grate on me, but now the mistakes have been noted I'm sure they will be corrected in due course, and in any case aren't as important as people not being at each other's throats.

Not trying to start a flame war here, but this thread makes me rageous, I have contrasting opinions to the strongest opinion here. I actually like the odd spelling/grammer mistake, as it makes us seem human. To me a thread with perfect grammer and spelling is far more intimidating as we all look like perfectionists who do not know how to relax. Then we start to look elitest and like we are above the general population. The point of communication is to be understood, this forum has never been uber serious, so why can't people relax and have a laugh, as long as everyone is understood.I have never met anyone who can't read through the odd mistake. I agree with christies point of not using acronyms people may not understand, but I think as far as fool t3h and l33T themselves go, everyone understands them, as they do " ", it is just the more detailed ones whihc I can see causing a problem. Stop being so nitpicky about grammer! there would be far less posts, far less enjoyment and the society would end up losing the people who find it difficult/pointless to always type in perfect grammer and spelling. Also, Ed there are far, far better ways to point out peoples mistakes, how about a nice friendly pm " I don't know if you notice but.." thin, which would have avoided all this confrontation, and if jamie was someone else he may have been embarassed by his mistakes and not wanted them pointed out to everyone, feeling it made him look a fool. Luckily our jamie is a bit tougher than that so I am sure he isn't embarassed As I said in the other forum, good work Jamie, its great to see you are doing things with the forum, and trying to make things better, don't let ungrateful people put you off.

Sorry, but I have to say I think you're totally wrong there. The general population can spell and tends to avoid obvious punctuation errors such as "Your" and "you're" where the usage completely changes the meaning of the statement. It is not in the slightest bit elitist to ask for and expect that people take a little bit of care with their writing. Also, you would (hopefully) never make mistakes like that writing a letter to somebody, so why should the internet deserve any less attention. It's not as if it requires any hardcore effort to add " ' " or whatnot. I'm not saying that posters should always have 100% Queen's English spelling/grammar, because, frankly, that's never going to happen. But I do think that people should make the effort to make their posts legible and not like some ridiculous drivel you have to slog through. The most important thing is that the society represents itself in a positive manner. It is not only members who will be looking at the site, but also the Union, and prospective and current sponsers. This website is the public face of the society for people who may not have or have had the chance to meet you lot face-to-face. All that said, hopefully the little mistakes will get fixed and we can all stop squabbling over this!

I really disagree with you on this one too Marisa.
"It makes us seem human"?!? If the only telltale sign of humanity is spelling mistakes then I'd rather be...whatever the other choice is, a robot or something...
I honestly think that people being put off of a forum because its users spell correctly most of the time is an extremely unlikely scenario. If there was actual nitpicking going on with every single post on the forum then obviously that could upset/exclude dyslexic people or something, make everything feel very restrained and would generally be very dumb indeed. But we're just talking about things like having the section headers on the main page spelled correctly - that can't possibly considered elitist.
And even if it can, I think I'd probably rather give the impression that we're somehow trying to be superior to everyone else than being represented as an illiterate pleb!
In any case, the odd foibles with the new forum seem to be fixed now, so let's all stop posting on this damn thread and go for some frosty chocolate milkshakes.
