Perhaps a subscription to Newtype would be a cool idea as it comes with a DVD and we could watch an episode off that and after a while we'd have a good back catalog of the magazine which people could take out or whatever. Other than that I wouldn't mind seeing fansubs that other people are willing to download as I don't have internet connection and am irc-retarded.

That's actually a very cool idea. I've just written a quick email to CCA to try to find out how much something like that might cost us.

Excel Saga - completely insane, and funny (if you find insanity amusing). Should be seen just to witness the voice-over talent of Jessica Calvello (Excel). Methinks a speed-freak. Dead Leaves - awesome, the very definition of OTT. Samurai X (the OVA's: Trust, Betrayal, Reflection) - the best samurai-related Anime I've seen so far (but I've not seen much). Didn’t think The Motion Picture was up to the standard of the others, but I guess you could add that to the list for the sake of completeness. Kino's Journey - my favourite Anime series. Metropolis Escaflowne - I loved this, but I can understand why others would think it was a bit lame. Castle In The Sky Serial Experiments Lain - as baffling as it is awesome. Just a selection. Ideally I’d add everything I could to the list, but that seems like a good enough cross-section of my favourites.

Tell you what. i'll contribute the 4 discs I got with the issues I bought from Travelling Man when they were selling old Newtypes for £2.99 (bargain.) I'm not sure about giving the magazines up yet (they have lovely double-page spreads!) but if you can convince me I don't see why I need to keep hold of them (it's old news at the end of the day anyway.)

if you can convince me I don't see why I need to keep hold of them How about a little ? (My convincing skills are unrivaled!) (I'm not actually selling my body for anime I swear!) It would be great to have the dvds, and if you do decide to part from the magazines, you could always "borrow them back" from us if you got the urge...and just think of the joy you will be spreading! The countless anime fans who will be able to run freely over sunlight meadows - all thanks to your kindness!

I can donate one copy of an old Uk anime magazine, with a feature on Samurai Champloo!
Oh, and the first copy of Tokyo MewMew manga.
Where are all these items going to be stored/ looked after?

Personally I would recommend ebay as a source for anime or manga because thats where i got most of my stuff from. its got to be legal otherwise ebay wouldn't list it and the dvds are usually very good (though most of them are imported from singapore or china so take about 2-3 weeks to arrive). Second hand manga books from ebay are good too if they're gonna be lent out and nobody minds what condition they get into. As to rentals, www.screenselect.co.uk has a massive selection of anime and only costs £10 a month which i can seriously recommend! Finally (and i think a few guys can back me on this because its what got them hooked on anime) the guyver series is definately one for the library if you can find it available on dvd in the uk cos the manga books are very long and expensive i'm told.

There are loads of fake versions usually with good/totally different cover art, subs can fansubs/unofficial. Most of these come from China & singapore! Ebay still lists it its up to the seller to post the correct information. Some blatantly say its fake...'will run on a computer' Just be careful if ur not looking to buy a fake, do your research, and be prepared to pay the right price

Yeah, I don't think we will be buying from Ebay - the union would not be impressed to find out we were spending their money on fakes

its got to be legal otherwise ebay wouldn't list it Unfortunately... not true in the slightest. In theory eBay shouldn't list bootlegs, but most of the time there's no concrete way for them to say "yes, that's a bootleg". Plus, there's far too many auctions for them to realistically get rid of. I'd say probably 80% of anime boxsets on eBay are bootlegs. If it's from China, Singapore etc, and has both English and Chinese subs, it's almost certainly going to be fake. In general, if it's not region 1 or 2 yet has english subs, chances are it's bootleg. It can be hard to tell. I had an unfortunate experience where I bought a boxset - it had the ADV artwork, english subs and the dub, extras etc... looked perfectly official. But, nope - turned out to be bootleg. Plus the price and number of eps/disc is usually a give-away too. Unless you know exactly the details of the DVD you're looking for, eBay's probably not the best bet if you want legal anime.

I still think it's hilarious, but it was obviously a poor choice of things to show, so... sorry ^^;; (FWIW, I still haven't bought past the first disc. I think one was enough. Nonetheless, I do like my brain-melty anime!) On a different note, yay to the people lambasting bootlegs. eBay's practice of virtually ignoring them is... irritating.

Although most anime here is available on VCD, since that's cheaper. But yes, I could walk into a Virgin Megastore here and pick up 26 episodes of Naruto, subbed, for about 30 quid. And it's official and legal.

well last time i went to hong kong (not exactly china but close enough, but seriously the 2 are not the same thing, theres almost a class devide type thing, hong kong ppl look down on main land china people at least thats the general feel i get. even the chinese people here look down on them anyway back to my point) i bought 2 boxes hellsing and najica (such a stupid idea as it turns out) anyway i thought they looked alright, and were sold in a proper shop, fine it wasnt some major name shop, but you would assume. turns out they were official, or at least i guess not cos the subbing was awful, and some of the visual was about as good as vcd standard, and for dvd that was pretty terrible.

"Very few officially licensed DVDs sold in Taiwan, Hong Kong and other Region 3 countries have English and Cantonese/Chinese subtitles, this includes "Spirited Away", "My Neighbour Totoro" and "Kiki's Delivery Service", which do have official releases (with English subtitles) but are still being pirated. So remember, if it is set to Region 0 or All Regions and has Chinese as well as English subtitles there is a very strong chance that the title is a bootleg." But, it does mention that, "It should be noted that Odex a Singapore based company do sell legally licensed anime DVDs and VCDs at a reasonable price, these are mostly Pioneer titles.", so. ^^ This is a really good and informative page on bootleg anime products: www.digital.anime.org.uk/piratefaq.htmlrecommended reading

Ebay is where I usually buy my anime from... although I have run into problems now and again, like barely understandable fansubs (it's so hard to enjoy Anime when you hardly understand what's going on. My Mythical Detective Loki series gives me headaches, hehe). But here's a REALLY good seller. I've bought two things so far from them... both excellent. And cheap too! Even the sets that are for complete series' are pretty good value. search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZmaganlalbThere's quite a few obscure anime's that I've never heard of... but hey, we should branch out, right? Make new discoveries? And it's easy to look them upon the internet to find out what they're about. Give 'em a look! I think it'd be money well spent.

Why why why haven't I seen this mentioned in this thread yet*: AZUMANGA DAIOH!!!!!111 Plzplzplz, kthx Oh, and I agree with ArgentStar: Excel Saga! And Puni Puni Poemi to boot. PPP is only two eps long, so the society can definitely afford it as it'll only be 1 DVD (I hope!) *searches Amazon* FFS Note to all: the series is called "Puni Puni Poemi" NOT "Puni Puni Poemy". I don't care what it says on the DVD case on the ADV release. It's just not called that. Just... no. * if it turns out that a society member already owns the entire series, I'm going to look stooooopid now ;D edit: and there it is, in the Borrowing/Lending thread. *looks suitably stooooopid*. Excel Saga though, definitely.

I think films should be a fairly high priority. Films are good for repeated screening year after year, anyone can watch a film without prior experience of anime, and they're single DVD purchases. I shouldn't need to give a list of films, but I will mention Wings of Honneamise, because it's often overlooked, despite being an excellent film.

The problem with WoH is that the R1 release has notoriously screwed up video, and there's no other subtitled DVD release available. (The R2 Japanese release has the dub though. Plus it was released on VHS in the UK, of course, though edited for a PG rating.)
The above makes up pretty much the entirety of why I haven't seen this widely praised film :\
