Am I the only person not raving about this?, well I know i'm not cause someone else told me it gave them a headache too i musn't be intelligent enough for this or something, because it went way over my head i got totally confused and my eyes ached afterwards. this is another one dedicated to my "go to the tuck shop slot" these are becoming more and more commen i don't think I have the brain cells for half of these more azumanga and chobits for me please on a positive note, i was impressed with the animation style because its something different, and must have been difficult to achieve, although maybe its really easy, im not exactly very knowledgable about these sortsa things, but yea that made it worth it to see something totally difference for once, but once is enough for me

Aww, well, I suppose it is quite distinctive, so won't be to everyone's tastes. I think the animation probably grows on you once you get used to it though...as the first time I watched it I thought it was really weird, but after a few eps stopped noticing it at all. what don't you get about it? just curious... as the beginning is supposed to be all mysterious and hint at stuff, but not really tell you what's going on yet. all eventually becomes clear ^^ it's fair enough though, people seem to either love or hate it =D it's mostly plot/character development, though it starts leading up to the exciting stuff (duels (one with MECHA XD), poisonings, murder, incest, insanity etc) soon ;D

well i quite enjoyed it!! id be happy 2 see it more! im quite a fan of the animation- and i think the characters are quite cool, and realistic-ish- its more subtle than a lot of anime! and i like the dark epic undertone underlying it all

Did anyone watch the TV drama of the count of monte cristo that was on ITV a while ago? I liked that, but I think cause I know the twist I'm not finding it that good. And I don't like the wallpaper animation. Safe to say it's not my favourite (infact least favourite from all I've seen) from Gonzo. But thats just my opinion, hence why it says I posted it.

hee, it is dark and epic indeed =D one of the eps is the most depressing i've ever seen ahh - i should probably say, gankutsuou ends up veeeeery differently to both the book and all the other adaptations. ^^ so, if you haven't seen ganku before, you don't know how it ends =p what twist are you thinking of? I know the more recent movie decided to be utterly insane and make albert the count's son (noooo!) but i guess they didn't do that for the tv series. *wants to see*

No yeah that was the twist I meant

ahh, right ^^ well, thankfully that's definitely not the case with Gankutsuou, as otherwise it would make certain scenes a bit... um... well, at one point it seems that albert starts to tell the count that he loves him - but he's cut off so it's all left very ambiguous... though personally i think the implication's there. ("boku wa... boku wa anata ga--")

I hope we haven't given away the ending. That'd be like saying Bruce Willis is dead in Sixth Sense.

hehe, no... what happens in the last 6 eps is all rather unexpected =D (or so i thought, anyway!) i don't think the ending would have been nearly so effective if they'd decided to make him the count's son like in the movie. ganku's ending is totally different to the book, but just as good, i think.
eta; oh yes, the third DVD volume just came out, so i picked it up in town today ;D am very intrigued to hear what andrea's dub voice sounds like...! i have a feeling it'll be horrible, but you never know.

I don't think the book would have quite the same thing happen to the Count. You know, with the eyes and shit (desperately tries not to give something away). But anyway, of course Albert loves the Count, that voice could easily turn an impressionable young man gay. (And if Albert is anything, it's an impressionable young man)

Haha, yeah... that part's, um, unique. ^^; (and also totally changes the count's character, but that's a different discussion...) ...best comment ever. love and so true! XD ETA: okay, done watching the 3rd DVD (eps 9-12) ^^ only watched clips of the dub (though i'll watch it through all dubbed another time) but andrea doesn't actually sound that bad! i still think the worst done voices are Danglars (argh!), Eugenie ( ) and Peppo (too squeaky). Albert and Franz's are still the best done, and the Count's has grown on me quite a lot. It was quite interesting seeing the difference between the official subs and the fansubs... Franz's conversation with Maximilien in ep 9 ( that one about hopeless love =p) was actually less ambiguous than the fansubs. I mean, from that it was always blatantly apparent Franz is pining for Albert, but they made it... hmm, well, the phrasing ws more obvious. Also, at the end of ep 9, when the count's by the place where he dug up 'the box' and doing his "beautiful child who knows naught of love" monologue - the official subs really confused me. o__o i'm sure it's a classical reference i don't get (must go look it up) - but he just says dramatically a couple of times, "thou art anathema!" Um. When in the fansubs he said, "this is your first cry, this is your curse." hehe, i'd also forgotten how much i love ep 12. ;D the albert/eugenie-ness is so cute. /dvd rambling ETA2: yup. Anathema: "Anathema (Greek Word -Ανάθεμα-: meaning originally something lifted up as an offering to the gods; later, with evolving meanings, it came to mean 1. to be formally set apart, 2. banished, exiled, excommunicated or 3. denounced, often misinterpreted to mean accursed). There is some difficulty translating this word, especially since it has now become commonly associated with the term accursed." I guess the 2nd and 3rd meanings are most apt.

I think I'm gonna have to hear this dub. (especially the obvious-ness of Franz =P )Does andrea manage to pull off the evil-but-sexy voice? I dunno, I'd probably scare ppl by saying I actually quite LIKE andrea, he's cool. (mentally disturbed, but cool ) As a side note: when i read your above post, I thought you mean the "beautiful child" bit was a quote from somewhere else(which I think it is... but maybe i'm mis-remembering...) but the whole "anathema" bit is really common (One of my books has a girl who's NAME is Anathema! good thing it's a joke...)

hehe, good omens? that's what it made me think of =p yeah, andrea's a great character ;D and you do feel kind of sorry for him... because he's clearly insane (and yes, very disturbed ) evil-but-sexy voice? yeah, he does an alright job =p although i don't know if i can see him doing the crazy parts all that well...but we shall see. hehe, hmm, what is it that franz says in the dub... f: i'm worried about albert - what could be wrong with him? i've known him since we were kids, and he's never had so much as a mild cold. m: you and albert were the closest of friends even when you were young children, weren't you? f: yeah. m: mlle valentine told me all about it. she told me that she's always been jealous of how close you two are, and how she wishes she had the same thing in her life. f: it's just because we've known each other for so long. m: you know, i don't think it's just because you're old friends... f: *gasp!* m: i somehow get the distinct impression that you share a special bond that no-one else can understand. f: speaking of sharing special bonds, how long have you desired valentine? m: well, that's an awkward question to be asked by her fiancé. f: of course, you're right. i'm sorry. m: no, don't be, i am the one who is at fault here. f: but if you truly love her, then that should be all that matters. [while thinking of albert] m: there you go, saying such irresponsible things yet again... f: irresponsible, huh? I suppose it is. m: this is all very strange to me, franz. why is it that you can't you love mlle valentine? she is your fiancée, after all. f: yeah, and what about you? will you stop loving her just because you can't marry her? m: well, i'm... f: you can't, can you? you can't simply fall out of love, can you? even the relationship is such where you can't marry the person, no matter what you desire. m: are you saying you harbor a hopeless love for someone too? f: getting married isn't necessarily the only way to bring that person happiness. don't you think? m: i haven't thought about that... maybe you're right about that, franz. ...yes, i'm bored. >.>

(well, and i bet the count could tell, too.) yeah i'm pretty sure! i'd need to watch it again to check, but i'm almost certain they use monsieur/madame etc. ^^

Yeah, but the count knows EVERYTHING (pretty much). Even in the book he seems almost psychic: he guesses about eugenie & mlle d'armilly when no-one else does (apart from andrea: but then he kinda "drops" in on them so he gets some pretty heavy hints.) As a random question: is there a scene in gankt. where the count has a hot air balloon at a party or something similar or did i totally hallucinate that scene? eh heh.... I've checked LOADS of episode summaries and no-one mentions it, so i'm thinking i dreamt it; which is a pity 'cos it was a v. cool scene... or maybe i'm thinking of another anime, but i'm sure it was gankt. (If i [you] DID[/you] dream it, thats worrying: my dreams are getting more detailed than stuff that actually happens in the series )

hehe XD no, there's no scene like that in ganku... but, if i remember rightly, that's how the count makes his entrance into parisian society in the film! so i don't think you're imagining it (...unless you haven't seen the film, in which case you must be psychic XP) and yeah, that's true. though i think the others were pretty oblivious to not notice eugenie's complete and utter disinterest in men... nor her "omg haydee love love" ness at the opera.

w00t! my psychic powers are improving then: I havent seen the film [book quote] Eugenie: "Have you remarked upon the extreme beauty of that young female? ... Who is she, M. Morcerf?" (and talking about haydee's jewels) "she would look far better if she wore fewer, then we should be able to see her finely formed throat and wrists." (when asked about the count, in contrast, who is supposed to be as handsome as haydee is beautiful) "The count?" repeated Eugenie, as if it had not occured to her to observe him sooner, "the count? Oh- he is so dreadfully pale." [/book quote] Meanwhile, as I'm reading the book yet again, i notice the countess G--- hits on Franz quite alot, dont you think? Countess: (Franz says he wants to go talk to the count at the opera) "No, no! You must not leave me, I depend upon you to escort me home. Indeed I cannot permit you to go.... Pursue your researches as you will tomorrow, but tonight you neither can nor shall. For that purpose I mean to keep you all to myself." Methinks there is something going on there, and its kinda hinted at being one-sided in the anime too (after all what woman invites a guy to take her home and then has a shower with the door open while her male guest is sitting in the next room?) (am bored )

aha, indeed. XD and yeah... the countess g--/franz-ness is definitely there in both, though obviously in ganku we know why he's not interested. (don't think i can remember his reactions in the book...meaning to reread it over easter, anyway =D) ooh, and the next episode's the one with haydee's amazing opera dress ;D

Regarding franz & the countess: As i find it, there's no real evidence exactly how franz feels towards the countess in the book, one way or another. He's more-or-less the perfect gentlemen: he walks her home when she asks, he talks to her, tells jokes & laughs at hers, he goes to see her in the opera box everytime she's there (seems like alot of attention on one woman..) ... but then he's happy to leave when the countess wants to talk to albert, and when he's walked her home and asked her if she's okay, he goes back to his & albert's rooms in the hotel. *shrug*
